A new campaign against the Ipswich Northern Bypass has been backed by North Ipswich MP Dr Dan Poulter.
The Stop Ipswich Northern Bypass website shares that Dr Poulter believes 'a new road is a trojan horse for a new town north of Ipswich.'
Campaigners against the development say there is little or no evidence that the Ipswich Northern Bypass would reduce traffic congestion in the town and feel it could lead to substantial housing developments along its route.
The group lists ten reasons to oppose the Northern Route, including: the wide destruction of beautiful countryside and quiet country lanes, an increase carbon emissions and reduction in air quality generated by more traffic and roads potentially splitting villages in half.
On the other side of the discussion, Orwell Ahead has shared a list of 40 reasons why Ipswich needs a northern bypass.
Its reasons for backing the Ipswich Inner Northern Route include: sustaining the continued growth in population, housing, transport and freight; keeping the Port of Felixstowe and the wider Ipswich economic area viable and relieving stress on the southern bypass and Ipswich's interior roads, which will improve transport in and round the town.
With large housing developments planned by three local councils to the west, east and north of Ipswich and the town's roads already being heavily congested, the group believes that additional highway capacity is essential for the whole area to thrive.
