Council to discuss zero-carbon alternative to the Ipswich Northern Route

A motion encouraging Suffolk County Council to stop funding for the Ipswich Northern Route and investigate a zero-carbon alternative will be discussed today.

The motion, put forward by Green councillor Robert Lindsay and Lib Dem councillor Caroline Page, says that the council has declared a climate emergency and is aiming to become carbon neutral by 2030 and that all its decisions on major infrastructure projects should now give more weight to whether they will increase or reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The motion goes on to call on the council to cease any further spending on the Ipswich Northern bypass and instead spend equivalent funds to commission a study to investigate a zero net carbon transport policy for Ipswich and its surrounding communities.

Ahead of the meeting members from the Stop The Ipswich Northern Bypass group and Ipswich branch of the Extinction Rebellion will be gathering outside Suffolk County Council's offices at Endeavour House.
